You've started meditating. Maybe a week in, maybe a month. And you're sitting there, waiting for something to happen — some bolt of clarity, some warm wave of peace — and instead you're just... thinking about what to have for dinner.
So you wonder: is it working? Am I doing it wrong? How long is this supposed to take?
I want to give you the honest answer, not the one that sounds good on a retreat brochure.
First: Well Done for Sitting in the Fire
Meditation is not easy. That's not said enough. People think because it looks passive — just sitting, just breathing — that it must be simple. But sitting still and facing yourself is one of the most confronting things a person can do.
All the layers you've been pushing down. All the feelings you've been running from. All the noise you've been drowning out with busyness and scrolling and snacking — when you sit down and get quiet, all of that starts to surface. That's not a malfunction. That's the process.
So if your first weeks of meditation feel uncomfortable, even unsettling — that's not a sign to stop. That's a sign something is moving.
There Is No Timeline
I'll say this as plainly as I can: there is no deadline. There is no "you should be feeling this by now."
Some people feel something profound from day one. Others sit for months before anything noticeably shifts. Both are completely normal. Both are valid. The path of inner work is one of the few places where comparison will genuinely work against you.
Your nervous system is its own ecosystem. It moves at its own pace. It processes at its own depth. Trying to measure your inner life against someone else's is like comparing the weather in two different countries and wondering why yours isn't sunnier.
What I've seen again and again is this: people sit, feel nothing, keep going — and then something changes in their life that they later trace back to the practice. A reaction that used to set them off just... doesn't. A conversation that would have spiralled stays grounded. The meditation was working all along. It just wasn't making noise about it.
Consistency Over Duration — Every Time
If you're choosing between meditating for ten minutes every day or one hour once a week, choose the ten minutes.
Every time.
Consistency is more important than duration. This isn't just a preference — it's how the nervous system actually changes. It's how new habits form. Repetition is the mechanism. The brain and body learn through return, through showing up again and again and again, even for just a short while.
Think of it like physical training. You don't build strength by lifting as heavy as possible once a week. You build it through repeated, consistent effort — even moderate effort — over time. The nervous system responds to the same principle.
Researcher Judson Brewer has studied habit loops extensively and found that the key driver of lasting change isn't intensity — it's repeated association. The nervous system learns: this is what we do now. That only comes from showing up regularly.
Let Go of the Feeling You're Chasing
Here's the subtler thing I want to offer you — and it's the thing that trips people up the most.
If you're meditating in order to feel a specific feeling — connected, peaceful, expansive — you've created a goal. And goals create tension. And tension is the opposite of what meditation is inviting you into.
What if, instead of looking for a particular experience, you practised being open to whatever arises?
Sometimes what arises is boredom. Sometimes it's grief. Sometimes it's nothing at all — just a quiet hum and a wandering mind. All of that is the practice. None of it is failure.
And sometimes the most profound insight doesn't arrive during the meditation. It comes after — an hour later, the next morning, in the middle of a conversation. You'll be going about your day and something will land differently. And you'll know, somewhere below your sternum, that the sitting had something to do with it.
A Gentle Invitation
If you're new to meditation and you're not feeling anything yet: keep going. Not because I'm telling you to, but because something in you was drawn to this for a reason. That something is worth listening to.
Sit for ten minutes. Do it again tomorrow. Don't measure. Don't compare. Don't expect.
Just come back.
The fruit doesn't announce itself before it ripens.
That's the practice. That's all of it.
